In an apparent attempt to smear dead Florida teenager Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman’s defense team has released photos and text messages from Martin’s cellphone ahead of a hearing next week that will determine whether they’re admissible in court.

Lawyers for the man who shot and killed Trayvon Martin are now looking at text messages ofthe teenager, finding out he was getting into fights, smoking marijuana, getting suspended from school, and other assorted things.

None of it paints the picture of a saint. But what in the world does it have to do with the unarmed Martin getting shot while walking in an apartment complex.

If the defense is trying to put Trayvon Martin on trial, good luck with that. Good luck with showing that because he did some regretful things while in high school, that maybe he was a troublemaker who caused Zimmerman to shoot him.

None of this background stuff is relevant to the killing. None of it. If George Zimmerman smoked pot five years ago, is that relevant?
