On Tuesday afternoon, Apple CEO Tim Cook introduced the biggest iPhone in the device’s seven-year history.
And then, five seconds later, he announced an even larger one.
Yes, Apple unveiled two new iPhones on Tuesday — the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus — both of them with the biggest displays of any smartphone in Apple history. The iPhone 6 features a screen measuring 4.7 inches diagonally, while the iPhone 6 Plus is even larger, at 5.5 inches.
Both the devices feature rounded edges and are slightly slimmer than the iPhone 5s. Apple also says battery life has been improved on both devices, and both come with improved cameras.
The larger screen size is the most notable change about this year’s iPhones. From the first iPhone in 2007 through the iPhone 4s in 2011, Apple maintained a display size of 3.5 inches, measured from one corner to its diagonal. In 2012, with the iPhone 5, it increased the display to 4.0 inches; last year’s iPhone 5s maintained that size. This year’s bump to 4.7 and 5.5 inches represents another large jump and brings Apple’s flagship devices closer in screen real estate to Samsung’s Galaxy S5 (a 5-inch screen) and Galaxy Note 4 (5.7 inches).
Apple has been under increasing pressure from financial analysts to up the screen size of its smartphones. Despite record sales in each successive year, Apple has not dominated the smartphone market in countries like China and India, where shoppers have flocked to devices with larger screens from companies like Samsung and LG. The bigger iPhones are seen as an attempt to appeal to those potential customers, who would have otherwise dismissed the iPhone as unrealistically small.
Joe Franklin I think i was expecting a lot from apple being this is the first major changes in years. only thing I like is it looks like my iPad mini but smaller but far as technology I think Samsung is killing them. using my iPad mini vs. my note 3 and my noten3 wins every time
I’m sorry but there isn’t one single iota of innovation in these new iPhones. At least not enough to warrant an upgrade. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Passbook wasn’t NFC. Google Wallet is. Apple is jumping on the bandwagon with NFC and all the people who HAVE NOT used a galaxy phone that had this capability will think it’s some new innovation. Even Apple’s website tried to trick people yesterday like NFC was something they just brought to the table.
Joe we’ve had passport too with those small retail stores and small store pay
I’ve actually tried Android device before (Samsung Galaxy) – so I’m not just disliking it without at least having tried it out. I don’t like it from personal experience & comparison
Samsung has been had Google Wallet. No need to follow suit. I’ve been paying at Walgreens and gas stations with my phone since 2012. sorry Wan Sheldon… the only thing I will say is that since iPhone has such a blind following that many retailers are going to start adding Near Field Communication capable pay terminals now. However that’s going to be a plus for Samsung users as well.
I have a free unit coming so I’ll try it and see of I change my mind
Apple pay is awesome
Yep and y’all android folk will follow suit – it’s the way technology is going
Apple pay is dangerous. Apple can’t even keep folks photos secure and y’all trust them w/ yall cc info? Wan Sheldon
I’m probably biased but the functionality on that new phone is great – plus the software is killer
The fingerprint sensor combined with the new apple pay runs circles around samsung/android
The price for the smaller phone didn’t change it’s been $199

apple has to continue to raise prices in order to make a huge profit because they lost the market. Samsung sold 100 million phones last quarter to apples 47 million. only way apple can get it back is if they lower the price but they rather sell less phones at a higher price
the cellphones and iPads are too expensive. I think the mini is reasonable price that’s why I won’t get another ipad. retina screen mini for $250 wasn’t bad but some of these iPads are $900 and now they phones are up there in price. Samsungs phones are 200 cheaper and they had 1920x 1080 almost 3 years ago! SMH at apple. they could of did a 4K screen on the iPhone plus but that would of made the phone $3999.99 smh!
I agree Kingsmen White, but they know the average consumer has the hunger and thirst for the next best thing in smartphone technology! Mainly just the bragging rights to say you got it when it dropped!
I’m team iPhone but I expected so much more with the release of these 2 new phones. Samsung is taking over the cell phone world and Apple needs to come way more harder if they want to stay in competition. The cost of their phone is to expensive not to bring all the things the consumer expects plus more..
I think it’s safe to release a phone every 2 years and not every year because they are running out of ideas for phones
the phone looked nice but Apple is just playing it safe by playing catch up to Samsung. they are doing what Samsung did last year
I haven’t watched it cuz I’m at work I’ll ck it out later
I just wasn’t impressed. They have a long way to go to catch up with Samsung
