That story fit a longtime conservative suspicion that poor people use food stamps to purchase luxury items. Now, a Republican state lawmaker in Missouri is pushing for legislation that would stop people like Greenslate and severely limit what food stamp recipients can buy. The bill being proposed would ban the purchase with food stamps of “cookies, chips, energy drinks, soft drinks, seafood or steak.”

“The intention of the bill is to get the food stamp program back to it’s original intent, which is nutrition assistance,” said Rick Brattin, the representative who is sponsoring the proposed legislation.

  1. Witnessed a guy buy 8 packs of smokes at a convenience store with wads of cash. Then proceeded to buy ICE with his ebt card. Freaking ice…..is ice a necessity? I think not. If you can afford $60 in cigarettes you can certainly afford your own ice tray. Ridiculous. You should only be able to use ebt cards at grocery stores.

  2. To a point I agree. I feel like eating fine cuisine is due to working hard. But then we don’t want to belittle those less fortunate.
I must say I knew a person on hud with a house better than mine. I was offended.
You should have to serve community service or work to get any government benefits. Not to mention drug test

  3. This is what happens you sit back during midterm elections……we are becoming a society which elevates the working class while suppressing the poor….but people fail to realize majority of families on FS have a working adult in the home……so to say well you don’t make as much money as me so you can’t eat and buy the things I buy for my family….is asinine….the form of classism…..which breeds bigotry and not to mention crime!!

    1. Not everyone on assistance have a working adult in the home. If they have a child below the age if 6 they are not required to look for work. So those are usually the ones that are 26 with 6 kids and 3 of them under the age of 6.

  4. Amounts are probably more ridiculous than the type of food. I do believe micromanaging the type of food is a bit much. We need to tighten up in other areas like their perks!

    1. Karl I see your point hun. But birthday cakes are a part of being a child. A child does not choose there lifestyle. So why should they suffer?
Every child should be able to celebrate a yr of getting older.

    2. It should be up to the child’s parent to whip out the Betty Crocker and get to whipping. But I feel where your coming from, I was looking at it from the standpoint of not being able to purchase cooked food on EBT but a decorated item is able to be bought.

  5. I think they should ban it. People.need to show what they are buying because they do make poor decisions that lead to bologna and Ramen noodles by the end of the month. That’s not a well rounded diet for a child. Children need consistency and nutrition in their diets and Ramen noodles are far from nutritious. His reason behind it is wrong and classism at best. However, and this is my personal opinion: If you are getting assistance you should be regulated on what you buy, just like WICC. They need some nutritionists on the lawmakers panel to put things like this in effect.

    1. They already do. The same way you get an education loan and they send it straight to the institution is the way Food Assistance should work. You never hear anyone complaining about WIC because their guidelines are already the norm. You know what is allowed and not allowed. The same thing should be in place for F.S. a certain amount from each food group.

    2. Have you ever been on WIC?? WIC provides you with the basics and it’s a program that works for what it was created for Nutritional assistance to which they specifically educate recipients on food nutrition but it doesn’t provide enough to feed a family on….where as the FS program is simply for supplementing incomes in the case of food assistance..you already have a program geared specifically for nutrional value, you don’t need another…and as far as education loans….most students end up with refunds when the loan/grant amount supersedes their balance to which they can do as they please with it….but even still the FS already works like that….you can’t buy anything else but most edible food stuff purchased in grocery stores to which the coupon is cashed in by suppliers to receive cash from the govt….so the actual money never reaches the recipient on the program

  6. I think it is wrong to think like that. Just because someone gets food stamps doesn’t mean they can’t eat just like you! Most people who get food stamps work a job everyday just like everyone else. These people are crazy and they will have to answer to God for all these mean shenanigans they are trying to pull. We are all a couple of paychecks away from poverty.
