The “I Am Hip Hop” Award, recognizing legends in hip hop music, returns to honor legendary rapper Scarface. Scarface is undoubtedly one of the most prolific rappers of all time. Hailing from Houston, TX he sharpened his skills growing up listening to Public Enemy and NWA, groups that not only peaked his lyrical delivery but his social consciousness. In 1991, he recorded and released his first big hit, “Mind Playing Tricks On Me,” with the Geto Boys; a song in which Rolling Stone rated as the #5 Best Hip Hop Song ever to be recorded. Scarface went on to deliver twelve stellar and critically acclaimed solo albums with the most recent, Deeply Rooted, debuting in the Top 10 of Soundscan’s Top Albums Sales chart (#8), Top 10 on four Billboard Charts (#2 Rap, #3 Indie, #3 R&B/Hip Hop, #8 Digital) and Top 20 on The Billboard 200 (#11). Scarface recently penned and released his memoirs, Diary of a Madman earlier this year.

Previous “I Am Hip Hop” Award honorees include Doug E. Fresh (2014), MC Lyte (2013), Rakim (2012), LL Cool J (2011), Salt-N-Pepa (2010), Ice Cube (2009), Russell Simmons (2008), KRS-One (2007) and Grandmaster Flash (2006).

  1. You ain’t lying.Prince was writing songs, writing movies, and producing his own before rappers did.And they wouldn’t recognize him.Scarface you the man

  2. I been around awhile.it’s bias in the game but only a few at one time from the south could hold their own.the south was the last to come up and that’s cool.everybody gets a turn.the problem is the radio programming.man,I drive trucks.I remember when celly cell came out with an album.I.Got back to the boot nobody knew.it shouldn’t be like that.we should hear everybody

  3. yesss he desreved it glad they showing homage to southren rappers from Louisiana i grew up listening to his music in the early 90’s #salute put some south in yo mouth

  4. More O.G. Old Skool Rappers Are Twice As More Worthy Than Any Of These New Era Bullshit Rappers 4 Real… Rap Will Never Be The Same… This New Shit Sucks !!!

  5. It’s about time. Mr Scareface if not the best to all to everyone, he has always been one of the top 5 lyricist ever. It’s about time BET is standing up to honor him.

  6. Sad thing is they will have him sit there and suffer while watching people like young thug and future perform before he can accept his award. It’s a slap in the face. A bunch of clowns who don’t understand the clarity of the award. It’s like giving batman an “I am justice” award in room full of villians

  7. He’s good Dee Belcher. He’d gotten sick awhile back but has since been taking better care of himself. I met him personally this last May & he was good.

  8. Its cool my brother. I just feel Prince should receive more lifetime achievement awards. I also think under praise because he’s not really media friendly so they hold it against him but real musicians and artists appreciate what Prince has brought to the game

  9. And it just goes to show that it don’t matter what set you from or if you are east, west, south, north, true talent prevails in the end. Face is an example of that.

  10. Maybe I’m in my feelings buuuuut…
I’d laugh and decline disrespectfully if I were him! What the fuck does he look like accepting any awards from BET?! This is the same TV station that has nominated Iggy Azalea, praised Fetty Wop and called Drake a legend in the making (so sorry I’m too grown to be fan of Lazy Eye and One Eye-I can’t and I won’t) and stopped playing videos to show rot-gut tv shows and movies! It’s a slap in the face. He is hands down one of the best lyricist ever! Awards should be showered upon him yearly!
Don’t kill me, that’s just my opinion.

  11. You better thank tupac for that, if tupac was alive he’d win every award and diss all these lame ass rappers make em have no career, Kendrick LAMEar, young Gaylord thug, lil wayne, fetty, rich homie.

  12. FOR THESE YOUNG DON’T NO SHIT ABOUT TRUE HIP HOP,SCARFACE IS THE TRUE BROTHER FROM THE CHI-TOWN WITH THE POWER OF VOICE THAT YOU CAN’T STOP ROCKING IT.AND SHOULD NEVER PUT HIS NAME AND RAP AT THE SAME TIME.HIP HOP IS WAY HIGHER THEN THAT.WERE YOU THINK JAY Z CAME FROM.YEAH HE USED ALL SCARFACE MUSIC FOR AT LEST 3 YEARS STRAIGHT US CHI-TOWN FANS HAD TO SET IT OFF YEARS BACK TO REMIND PEOPLE BACK IN THE DAY.HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN HONORED MANY YEARS AGO AND GOT NOTHING BUT RESPECT TO BROTHER SCARFACE

  13. Yo that is lovely to see Face one of the realest to ever bless a mic get this award. Pac would be happy for him they were kool. Real artist like face deserve this an more. Mad respect to the O.G

  14. Hip hop at that time was this so called gangsta swag type of music then people grow up and the babys become teens to early 20s they have a new swag style..its about whats hot now..

  15. It’s been a long time coming, finally recognize the one person who has always been down from day one, always stayed +, congrats bruh you deserve it!!!! #deeplyrooted

  16. Better late than never I guess. Face deserves any and all recognition. He’s hands down the best, period. He’s influenced everyone from Jay-Z to 2Pac to Pimp C to Drake, etc. Scarface and the Geto Boys have always not only told it like it is, but actually backed up their lyrics with facts. Listen to songs like the Geto Boys – Geto Boys & Girls or Bushwick Bill – Everclear, the shit they’re talking about really happened. Look it up.

  17. Hahahahhahahahahahahahahahaha honestly I haven’t shhhiiiiiiiiiitttt… hahaha I need to tho. I been hearing it on YouTube sliminnngggg, I heard that God track beat is Dope!

  18. It’s BET, the same network that, about 10 years ago, blacklisted certain rappers getting video play because they weren’t dumb down enough.

  19. PlUGGED…. ITS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING… BUT HE BACK UP IN TH B…. and hit these n.** WITH THIS GANGSTA SH.*** THEY SMART Y’ALL YOU BETTER WATCH YO A.*** 1OF HIS LYRICS… SMH… LOVE YOU FACE

  20. Mr. Mr. Scarface from walking down the block
Out jumps some fiends and steals all his rocks
Pulls out a gun and shoots down all the fiends
And Mr. Mr. Scarface went up the block again

  21. Stacy Conley I’m not sure how long or how much you know about the Geto boys but Willie D is a beast also…. Will has been holding his own since day one…. The record sales will never tell the truth about any of the Geto Boys

  22. Sux that these garbage artists with Jingles for hit songs are making all the $$$ in the game.

Then artists like face record sales doesn’t come close to the likes of these New Wave Artists but lyrically they don’t even come close to face at all! Then they brag about, I didn’t even need a pen to write this album, believe me I know you didn’t, shits trash! Migos, Young Thugga, Homie Quan just to name a few.

The Deeply Rooted CD is insane. Face puts his heart&soul into this CD and it’s a masterpiece, Dr. Dre Chronic type Classic !

People really need to buy this CD, it will change the game, all that other BS out there please Steer!

  23. This is past over do for one of the best rappers ever hands down he is in my top 3 of all time. Congratulations Brad Jordan aka Scarface aka D—Act aka Face aka FaceMob.

  24. Face is the truth but Willie D went in hard solo first. Bald headed hoes, welfare bitches, I ain’t a gentleman, scar face just had that real which balanced out the group. Bush wick held his own.

  25. I SIT ALONE IN MY FOUR CORNER ROOM STARING AT CANDLES, AT NIGHT I CAN’T SLEEP I TOSS AND TURN VISIONS UP IN THE DARK AND PICTURING BODIES BEING BURN. Dope line from My Mind Playing Tricks On Me.

  26. About time. Meet Face a couple of times in the Ham. No security needed with him cause he so real. The only artist I would pay my money to see so a show. Just hate he gone be surrounded by a bunch of (talentless rappers) so called hip hop artist these days

  27. Do ya research. Neither Willie d nor Bushwick bill were rappers. Bill was a hype man and Willie Do was a gangsta. Face was the only one that was a rapper. J Prince and other members leaving brought them in.

  28. Being real about this bruh here, YALL BEEN BULLSHITTIN BCUZ THE BROTHER BEEN A BLACK POLITICAL ACTIVIST IN HIS RHYMES SINCE BACK IN THE NINTIES ALONG WITH OTHER GANGSTA RAPPERS N YALL WHITE PEOPLE HAVE NOT LIKED ANY OF THEM FOR THAT REASON ALONE

  29. He fake as 3$ bill was in a comedy club one night with him security pulled out a gun trying to remove a guest he go ducking under a table lmao not 1 shot fired

  30. Headline should read: “Rap legend to be honored at rap award show that showcases rappers who can’t rap.”

Face has to feel so awkward about this.

  31. Finally getting the recognition he deserves…not like he needs it for validation purposes…Always been a G in my book…Congrats Uncle Face…by the way another platinum album…Deeply Rooted

  32. Good point but go by record sales. Every album face made went gold. Willie D and Bushwicks albums didn’t sell shit. That alone tells you Scarface was the geto boys.

  33. I respectfully disagree….each member lyrics and delivery compliments each other…no doubt Face is a beast….to me the greatest to ever rap..but as a group it takes Will Face and Bill to make the group…
