The Paley Center for Media announced today that it will honor the visionary Actor, Writer, Director, Producer, Studio Owner, and Philanthropist Tyler Perry at its highly anticipated fall gala in Los Angeles, The Paley Honors. This once-in-a-lifetime celebration of Tyler Perry’s remarkable and enduring career will take place on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, at 6:30 pm at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

As one of the most inspiring, versatile, prolific, and innovative creatives working in media today, Tyler Perry has utilized the power of his bold and original storytelling to break barriers, dispel negative stereotypes, educate audiences, and bring people together. Tyler started out writing plays, many of which became the inspiration for his films, and has since gone on to create an endless array of bold characters, relatable stories, and blockbuster franchises across the media landscape, including the legendary and unforgettable “Madea.” Over the course of his storied career, he has produced over 2,000 episodes of television, and directed, written, and produced 28 feature films.

Tyler’s presence as a creative force is only equaled by his standing as a visionary business leader and philanthropist. In 2019, he celebrated the historic opening of Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta—a beacon within the community and the media industry overall.

“Throughout my career, I have strived to bring people together and to give a voice to those often underrepresented in media,” said Tyler Perry.  “Media has served as a vital platform for this mission, and I’m honored to receive this award from The Paley Center for Media, an organization that has dedicated itself to spotlighting the power and importance of media.”

“Through his acclaimed and prolific body of work, Tyler Perry has solidified his place as one of media’s greatest and most impactful figures,” said Maureen J. Reidy, the President & CEO of The Paley Center for Media. “With each new project, he continues to move our industry, and our culture, forward, and it is our great privilege to present Tyler with our highest honor, The Paley Honors Award, on December 4.”

The Paley Center has also convened some of Mr. Perry’s closest friends, colleagues, and contemporaries as part of its Paley Honors Tribute Host Committee. The illustrious list includes Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Ariel Emanuel, Jon Feltheimer, Whoopi Goldberg, Taraji P. Henson, Matt Johnson, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Gayle King, Debra L. Lee, Mellody Hobson and George Lucas, Scott Mills, The Honorable Nicole Avant and Ted Sarandos, and Kerry Washington.

In addition to receiving The Paley Honors Award, Tyler is also the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2021 Oscars and the Governors Award at the 2020 Emmys. He also has a multiyear first-look deal with Netflix to write, direct, and produce features and television for the streamer, and a four-picture film deal with Amazon, in addition to their release of the documentary about his life, Maxine’s Baby: The Tyler Perry Story in 2023. Tyler recently extended his exclusive multi-year linear and streaming content partnership agreement with the BET Media Group that includes seven current original Tyler Perry dramas and comedies. He also has an equity interest in the BET+ streaming service.

The Paley Center for Media is the world’s leading nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to preserving our media history and exploring media’s powerful shaping influence on culture and society. The proceeds from the evening will support the organization’s educational programs, and the ongoing preservation of the Paley Archive, the world’s foremost collection of television and radio programs.
