Kerry Washington talks diversity in entertainment / “Hollywood, the Sequel” podcast

Kerry Washington appeared on the debut episode of the podcast “Hollywood, the Sequel,” which looks at how the entertainment industry can change for the better following this moment of disruption.

Kerry makes some powerful points about how words like diversity and inclusion are inherently creating a world where there is an us and a them, an in and an out. She also addresses those who have asked how “Olivia Pope” would respond to the pandemic, saying “we can get into trouble when we rely on imaginary characters to save us…I have joked at times that part of how we got into the situation we’re in now is that we had a reality television character swoop into an election and people thought that he could save the day.”

Kendrick Sampson: Prove Black Lives Matter To Hollywood

Kendrick Sampson, BLD PWR founder, and actor, released a firm letter to Hollywood, specifically the people in leadership who perpetuated several negative stereotypes of Black people. Programs like Cops, Live PD, slave narratives, and several other programs that have permeated across entertainment. The letter serves to put Hollywood on notice that the time is NOW to change antiquated processes of operating within entertainment.
While stating the culture of entertainment is incredibly necessary, the letter also includes a list of demands to Hollywood from the Black community to end the glorification of police violence in our art and prove Black Lives Matter in Hollywood.
The letter serves as a notice to Hollywood and making teams aware that business, as usual, is over. Talent, producers, and representatives are no longer standing idly by. The letter has received overwhelming support from BLACK LIVES MATTER Founder and TV writer Patrisse Cullors, Movement for Black Lives, Color Of Change, People’s Budget LA Coalition, National Black Justice Coalition, and NAACP Hollywood Bureau among many other organizations. Gabrielle Union claims Simon Cowell doesn’t believe the “rules apply to him”

Speaking to Trevor Noah on The Daily Show (via Metro), Union said: “Day one, Simon Cowell is smoking cigarettes inside. I’ve worked a long time. I’ve worked with all kinds of people. I’ve never experienced that.”

“When your boss — the person who has the ability to determine who gets opportunities and who doesn’t — doesn’t believe that the… rules apply to him,” she continued, before adding that she has a severe allergy to cigarette smoke.

“And he does it in full view of NBC, Fremantle and Syco and no one cares about Simon Cowell exposing all of these employees to second-hand smoke. That’s day one.”

According to Deadline, Union has filed a harassment, discrimination and retaliation complaint with California’s Department of Fair Employment and Housing (DFEH), naming producers FremantleMedia and Simon Cowell’s Syco as well as NBC Universal and Simon Cowell himself.

Her complaint detailed allegations of insensitivity and sexism on set, while also making the claim that NBC Entertainment Chairman Paul Telegdy “threatened Union through her agent” in regards to her speaking out against racism on set.

Hollywood’s New Streaming Device Counts Viewers & Charges Per Ticket

With the buzzed about announcement yesterday from Deadline.comthat this December Hollywood is launching the new streaming device and app called Venue which enables the ability to monitor a living room for people and sell individual tickets to view at home first-run cinematic releases, sporting events, concerts and more, we would love to schedule an interview with you and CEO Cihan Fuat Atkin of XCineX to share the Hollywood, technological & business journey behind launching the first of its kind streaming platform.

The streaming device is called Venue, and it is like no other product on the market because it holds a detection sensor that counts the number of audience members present in the room, thereby giving content creators the ability to sell tickets on a pay-per-viewer basis. The sensor monitors the room throughout content stream and ensures the ticket-to-audience ratio is equal, giving content creators the ability to charge each viewer just like a movie theater, concert, or sporting venue. With a veteran Hollywood, technology, and media leadership team in place, this patented new breakthrough advancement in reaching consumers is a boom to the studio, concert, and live event marketplaces that will benefit from the at-home ticketing technology. In development for years before the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never been more imperative to bring the world’s most innovative technology directly into your home.

Usher Calling For Juneteenth To Become A National Holiday

Award-winning R&B/Pop singer Usher is calling for the United States government to formally acknowledge Juneteeth. He wrote an op-ed article for the Washington Post under the headline: “Why it’s so important that Juneteenth become a national holiday.

“We could observe it, as many black Americans already do, by celebrating both our first step toward freedom as black people in America and also the many contributions to this land: the construction of Black Wall Street; the invention of jazz, rock n’ roll, hip-hop and R&B; and all the entrepreneurship and business brilliance, extraordinary cuisine, sports excellence, political power and global cultural influence black Americans have given the world,” wrote Usher.

“And rather than observing Juneteenth as we do other holidays, by taking it off, we can make it a day when black culture, black entrepreneurship, and black business get our support. A national Juneteenth observance can affirm that Black Lives Matter!”

Rename Edmund Pettus Bridge? Nearly 100k, celebs, back campaign for ‘John Lewis Bridge’

new Change.org petition started over the weekend soared close to 100,000 signatures, calling for Alabama leaders to rename an historic bridge currently named after a KKK grand wizard and Confederate soldier.

The petition – which you can view at www.change.org/RenameTheBridge – calls on Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to rename the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, the site of the Bloody Sunday beatings of civil rights marchers in 1965, after civil rights icon Congressman John Lewis (D-GA, 5th District). Rep. Lewis was one of the marchers on the bridge in 1965.

The petition, started by podcast host Michael Starr Hopkins, notes that Edmund Pettus was a “bitter racist” and that as the country reckons with a history of landmarks named after racist historical figures, the name of the bridge should be reconsidered. Starr Hopkins thinks the bridge should be renamed after Rep. Lewis since he was born in Troy, Alabama, and he marched in Selma has become a civil rights icon.
