BET Networks, a unit of Viacom Media Networks (NASDAQ: VIAB, VIA), and Tyler Perry Studios today unveiled a new joint venture to launch BET+, a premier subscription video-on-demand service focused on the African American audience. Available to consumers this fall, BET+ will feature more than 1,000 hours of premium content including exclusive new original programming and fan-favorite series, movies, and specials from BET Networks, world-renowned creator Tyler Perry, and a host of leading African American content creators.
Mill, whose real name is Robert Williams, will become a co-owner of Lids, North America’s largest retail seller of hats and licensed sports products. He’ll also lead the company’s creative strategy and release a limited-edition line of hats through the brand in August.
Mill joins the Lids ownership team by way of his close connection with Michael Rubin, the co-owner of the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers, the executive chairman of the sports retailer Fanatics, and a cofounder of Mill’s Reform Alliance Foundation for criminal-justice reform. (Lids’ ownership includes Rubin’s Fanatics and the investment firm Ames Watson, which acquired Lids in February.)

On the eve of the release of his anticipated twelfth album Long Live Love, BMI singer/songwriter and Gospel superstar Kirk Franklin dropped by the BMI offices in New York for a special listening session. During the event, Kirk walked attendees through the tracks of the new album, explaining his approach to writing its music and lyrics, and sharing how even as an accomplished writer, performer, producer and arranger, he found solace and emotional therapy through that intense creative process.

Music industry icons turned feature filmmakers, Bryan “Birdman” Williams of Cash Money Films and Benny Boom of Groundwurk Studios are teaming as executive producers on Solomon Onita, Jr.’s Nigerian immigrant drama, Tazmanian Devil. Boom’s Groundwurk Studios and Williams’ Cash Money Films are providing the necessary financing to market and distribute the indie. Principal photography wrapped earlier in the year and currently the film is in post production.

DJ Khaled’s new album FATHER of ASAHD recently debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The album sold 136,000 units while Tyler the Creator’s album IGOR took the no. 1 spot with 165,000 units. DJ Khaled’s album fell behind because Billboard didn’t give him credit for 100,000 sales from bundled merchandise while Tyler’s IGOR was boosted by sales of clothes, buttons, and ‘VOTE IGOR’ lawn signs. One of Khaled’s bundles included an album with the purchase of energy drinks and were not counted towards his total!
Bushwick Bill dead at 52 after a fight with Pancreatic Cancer. The legendary member of the Geto Boys revealed last month that he had been diagnosed back in February and was currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatments, which led to the cancellation of their reunion tour later that month when Bushwick Bill wasn’t well enough to perform.
Although at the moment further details haven’t been made known, Scarface and Willie D took to IG this morning to announce his passing while letting it be known that “this is Geto Boys for life,” as the surviving members look to honor and pay tribute to the one and only Bushwick Bill.
