Box Office: Denzel Washington’s ‘The Equalizer’ Scores $35 Million Debut

IMG_3272.JPG

Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer proved the actor’s continuing popularity at the North American box office, debuting to $35 million from 3,236 theaters and marking one of the best openings of his career.

The $55 million action thriller, reuniting Washington with Training Day director Antoine Fuqua, is based on the 1980s TV series created by Michael Sloan and Richard Lindheim. Audiences gave the film an A- CinemaScore, in line with strong reviews. It played more evenly than expected gender-wise, with males making up 52 percent of the audience, and males, 48 percent.

Washington’s top opening of all time is American Gangster ($43.6 million) in 2007, followed by Safe House ($40.2 million) in 2012. Fugua’s Training Day debuted to $22.6 million in 2001.

T.D. Jakes Sues Young Jeezy and Kendrick Lamar over ‘HOLY GHOST’

IMG_3250-0.JPG

Jeezy collaborated with fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar for his hit single’s remix, “Holy Ghost.” In the track’s intro, listeners hear an annotated version of Bishop T.D. Jakes’ popular sermon “Don’t Let The Chatter Stop You.”
Although the track is a win with fans, Bishop Jakes’ legal team will be taking action for his sermon being featured in the rap song without authorization.
In the snippet, Jakes preaches:
To tell myself, I’m still on fire.
I’m under attack, but I’m still on fire
I got some chatter, but I’m still on fire
I got some threat, but I’m still on fire
I got some liabilities, but I’m still on fire
If it’s not amazing that I’m on fire
I’ve been to hell and back, but I’m still on fire
Jakes sermon aligns with Jeezy and Lamar’s verses that reminisce on the trials of a life of fame. Jeezy nostalgically tells listeners about his pre-rapper occupation as a drug dealer in order to develop a source of income. He then transitions into how his life — and his friends — changed after he became famous. Perpendicular to that, Lamar drops bars on how he enjoys his new life but he’s consistently questioning if he is a true role model by enjoying the materialism and sexual experiences that come with stardom. Both artists are conflicted with their lifestyles since the public and those close to them judge their characters.
The song title, Holy Ghost is based on the nickname Jeezy has for his Rolls Royce; he drives Ghost around while he is reflecting about life.

Young Thug on Why he Calls Men “Bae” & “Lover”

IMG_3212.JPG

Thugger was asked point blank what he means when he calls other men like Birdman or Rich Homie Quan names like “hubby,” “bae,” “lover,” etc. His response? It’s just a part of their lingo.

“It’s the language. It’s nothing stupid and fruity going on. It’s the way we talk, it’s the way we live. Those are my baes, those are my lovers, my hubbies, whatever you want to call them.”

When asked if calling men these affectionate names on social media is a strategic business move to attract attention & publicity, Thug says he can’t say yes or no to that.

Nick Cannon Sports $2 Million Shoes

IMG_3168-0.JPG

According to reports, actor-mogul Nick Cannon has the Web in an uproar over a very expensive fashion choice. He sported $2 million, diamond-encrusted shoes designed by Tom Ford for the finale of “America’s Got Talent.”

The loafer has 14,000 diamonds and was created by California jeweler Jason Arasheben, founder and owner of Jason of Beverly Hills.

“Not very often do I get a request for the most expensive shoes in the world,” Arasheben toldWWD. “When Nick approached me last year, he said he wanted to make history and be so over-the-top. He wanted to set a new standard in diamonds. ‘How can we make the most expensive pair of shoes in the world and make this finale special?’ he asked me.”

Some critics thought the fashion statement to be too extravagant:

Does anyone else agree that it’s insane that @NickCannon‘s shoes are worth twice as much as the prize the finalists can win on @nbcagt

No Good Deed Tops Weekend Box Office with $25 Million

IMG_3140.JPG
No Good Deed, starring Idris Elba and Taraji P. Henson, grossed an estimated $24.5 million domestically, I can only assume because people thought it was a sequel to Tyler Perry’s Good Deeds. Screen Gems chose not to screen the film for critics (supposedly in order to protect its shocking plot twist – yeah right) and who knows whether that helped its box office at all, but the people who made that decision will surely be pretending it did. (You can also insert your own conspiracy theories about the Ray Rice news hitting just as a movie about a guy stalking a woman was set to screen). It received a 12% recommended rating from the critics who did see it and a B+ Cinemascore. As for the “shocking twist,” one critic described it as “about as fiendishly clever as an episode of General Hospital.”

Either way, the film only cost $13 million to producing, another win in a big year for producer Will Packer, who has now made healthy profits on the Think Like A Man movies, Obsessed, and Ride Along. Proving that there’s still money to be made playing to black audiences underserved by mainstream movies.

NFL admits error on 51-yard TD run by Seahawks’ Percy Harvin

IMG_3122.JPG

“All scoring plays are reviewed by the instant replay official, in conjunction with the NFL officiating staff in New York, and are not subject to a coach’s challenge,” NFL spokesman Michael Signora said in a statement. “Following the first quarter touchdown run by Percy Harvin, the game should have been stopped for a replay review, either by the replay official or by the officiating staff in New York.
“The touchdown was incorrectly confirmed, and as a result, the game was not stopped. Had the game been stopped for a replay review, the touchdown would have been reversed because Harvin stepped out of bounds at the San Diego 21-yard line.”

Adrian Peterson indicted on child abuse charges in Texas

IMG_3100.JPG

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson was indicted Friday on charges that he struck his young son with a switch in Texas, according to a person in the NFL familiar with the situation.

A grand jury in Montgomery County returned the indictment Friday afternoon, according to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Peterson allegedly struck his young son, who spent the summer with the All-Pro running back in Texas, with a switch, according to the NFL source. The Vikings knew of the incident for several weeks, but thought Peterson had been cleared of all criminal charges, the source said.

The abuse allegations surfaced shortly after the child returned to his mother’s Minnesota home, according to the source, who said a doctor noticed “a mark” caused by a switch during a routine appointment.

Jay Z & Kanye West To Produce Chris Rock’s New Movie ‘Top Five’

IMG_3068.JPG

In a report by Deadline.com, Paramount Pictures has secured a $12.5 million bid to release Rock’s new movie, ‘Top Five’. The film is written and directed by the former SNL Legend, and co-stars Rosario Dawson, Gabrielle Union, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan, JB Smoove, and a host of others.

The film centers around Rock’s character “Andre Allen,” a comedic actor who’s seemingly lost his ability to be funny. Union plays his reality tv star girlfriend, while Dawson is the journalist trying to find out who the real Andre Allen is and what’s happened to him. Scott Rubin and Eli Bush take on the Producer roles of the film, with Jay Z and Kanye West listed as its Co-Producers. The star-studded comedy also enlists Questlove as the film’s Executive Music Producer, which should provide for a thoroughly entertaining flick down to the score.

Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy has died

IMG_3036.PNG

ATLANTA (AP) — S. Truett Cathy, the billionaire founder of the privately held Chick-fil-A restaurant chain that famously closes on Sundays but also drew unwanted attention on gay marriage in recent years because of his family’s conservative views, died early Monday, a company spokesman said. He was 93.

Chick-fil-A spokesman Mark Baldwin told The Associated Press that Cathy died at home surrounded by members of his family. The company said in a statement that preliminary plans are for a public funeral service at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Jonesboro in Jonesboro, Georgia.

Cathy opened his first postwar diner in an Atlanta suburb in 1946 and by 1967 he had founded and opened his first Chick-fil-A Inc. restaurant in Atlanta. Over ensuing decades, the chain’s boneless chicken sandwich he is credited with inventing would propel Chick-fil-A expansion to more than 1,800 outlets in 39 states and the nation’s capital. By early 2013, the company says on its website, annual sales topped $5 billion as the chain offered up a taste of the South that went beyond chicken to such offerings as sweet tea, biscuits and gravy.

Under the religiously conservative founder, the chain gained prominence for its Bible Belt observance of Sunday — none of its hundreds of restaurants are open on that day, to allow employees a day of rest. Its executives often said the chain made as much money in six days as its competitors do in seven.

Those religious views helped win Cathy and his family loyal following from conservative customers, but also invited protests when Cathy’s son denounced gay marriage.

Sunday Best: Geoffrey Golden Is Sunday Best!

IMG_2935.JPG

Geoffrey Golden once pretended to direct gospel choirs on his television screen, and now he is officially jump starting his gospel music career as the season 7 winner of BET Network’s “Sunday Best.”
Golden, 20, has not only won the coveted “Sunday Best” winner title, but a cash prize and recording contract with Kirk Franklin’s Fo Yo Soul / RCA Record label. The Cleveland, Ohio native told The Christian Post that winning the competition has brought him from a place of expectation to reality.
“I know God told me that there was a thing that he would do in my life and he was going to use me..some of those things that He’s placed in me would go out into the world,” Golden told The Christian Post. “Now I’m really walking in the promise of the thing that He said He would do. So moving from promise to performance is what I think it (means) to me more than anything.”
